WandaVision wasn’t shot as a Doctor Strange 2 prequel
“We were already well advanced in our product before theirs started.”
Benedict Cumberbatch did not make a magical appearance, in WandaVision, to consecrate once and for all the link between the Marvel series and the upcoming Doctor Strange 2. And for good reason: if Wanda will be present in the next opus of The Supreme Sorcerer, her sitcom was not really designed as a prequel to the film.
“To be honest, I didn’t know my role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness yet when we started filming WandaVision, ” says Elizabeth Olsen in Variety. “I was only made aware of it when I resumed filming during the pandemic, two months before the end. We had already filmed the majority of WandaVision. Really, I didn’t know anything about it. Doctor Strange 2, until This Marvel, isn’t pitching the movie to me verbally … So I tried, as much as possible, to make the show affect the movie and vice versa. I think that’s where the connection is. ”

The actress didn’t even know then that there would be a parallel universe story in the MCU sequel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: “I didn’t know about the multiverse when we were filming WandaVision. As for Pietro’s surprise arrival, it didn’t cross my mind for a second onset. I thought it was just a smart way to have a Pietro. I didn’t understand this plan wider in the multiverse than when I started working on this Multiverse of Madness or whatever the name of that movie Doctor Strange 2! ”
We, therefore, understand that the Disney Plus series was not really thought of as a prequel or a way to launch the rest of the events of the MCU. The showrunner Jac Schaeffer admits besides not to have been influenced by Doctor Strange 2: “To tell the truth, the connection between WandaVision and the place where we leave Wanda while waiting for Doctor Strange 2, it was done in a fluid way, quite naturally. Because we were already well advanced in our product before theirs started. So of course, we discussed it. So that this arc of acceptance, of mourning, occurs naturally in WandaVision. But then, we just pass the baton … ”
