Dark has been one of the most successful European series on Netflix. The German show, which mixes supernatural elements with a full-blown mystery atmosphere, has been renewed for three seasons, with the authors Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese hired by the streaming giant to create, immediately after the epilogue, also the sci-fi 1899, which didn’t have the same luck as its predecessor.
The events of Maura Franklin and the other passengers of the Kerberus ship ended in fact with the first season, after the unexpected announcement of the cancellation by Netflix. However, this does not also mark the end of the collaboration between the platform and the two authors, who are already working on a third, intriguing project, announced in the last few hours by the Deadline.
It is a television adaptation of the comic Something Is Killing The Children, published by BOOM! Studios and created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera. The story at the center of the series could somehow recall the one already seen in Stranger Things, a show which as we know has proved to be a real goose that lays golden eggs for Netflix and which, with the arrival of the fifth season, should close his events definitively, leaving a void that the platform could fill with this new project.
The story told in the comic is set in a small town called Archer’s Peak, where children mysteriously begin to disappear. Most of them never return, while the few who miraculously reappear do so by telling terrible stories of terrifying creatures who live in the shadows and eat children. The only hope of finding and eliminating the menace comes with a mysterious stranger with special powers, whom she believes the children and she claims she can see what they too have seen. Her name is Erica Slaughter. And all she does is kill monsters.
As mentioned, it is easy to identify several similarities between Something Is Killing The Children and Stranger Things: from mysteriously disappeared children to terrible creatures hidden in the shadows, up to the one who, endowed with supernatural powers, is the only one capable of fighting this dark menace. Is Erica Slaughter destined to become the new Eleven? The premises are all there, so we’ll see.
