Felix Magath has won several titles with FC Bayern – now the former champion coach is talking about the debate about Alexander Nübel.
Felix Magath advised Alexander Nübel to return to Bayern Munich early.
The former champion coach sees the injury to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as a great opportunity for his representative. And for exactly this role, Nübel,
currently still on loan to AS Monaco, has been traded as a possible candidate for weeks.
“I think he has to try if there’s an option,” said Magath in an interview with Sky – but also qualified: “The situation would be different if Nübel had an offer from another top club, with certainty, to still be in goal in six months. Then I would tend to do that if I were him.”
Whoever follows Neuer – who won’t be coming back this season – has an “incredible opportunity. Because he will be allowed to play in the Champions League and that is a great stage. He can prove himself and show everyone what he can do.”
Magath makes Nübel contract proposal
This could lead to the start of a career “that would otherwise never have existed”. Of course, every opportunity also comes with a risk. For Nübel it would be above all that he would have to sit behind Neuer on the bench again after the end of the season. After his arrival.
But that could be avoided, says Magath: “There is certainly the possibility of structuring the contract in such a way that he can decide after the season whether he stays in Munich or moves on.”
The biggest problem so far with a return campaign from Nübel is probably AS Monaco anyway. The goalkeeper’s current club has “the last word,” said Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic recently. In addition to Nübel, Yann Sommer (Borussia Mönchengladbach) is also being traded as a possible substitute.
He can take on any goalkeeper in the world
In general, Magath Nübel believes he can jump into the Bayern goal. “Playing for Bayern is something completely different. But if the sporting leadership around Salihamidzic and the once great goalkeeper Oliver Kahn are convinced of him, then that means something.”
But would he also be a real challenger for Neuer?
“Manuel has exceptional skills. At his age and after a long rehab, he may not be able to reach 100 percent of his potential. But he will still be so fit that he can take on any goalkeeper in the world,” said Magath: “If he wants to continue being number 1 at FC Bayern and the German national team, then he can do it.”
